I am looking for qualified and responsible fifth graders that could assist myself with the other teachers and administrators in the morning and afternoon. There are some duties that would include flag patrol, bus duty, car greeters, breakfast duty, hall monitors, escorts, etc. to help allow the school run smoothly before and after school. If you need more information, please ask Coach J!
Hey guys, I am Coach J and I am the new PE teacher at Varner Elementary School. I am very excited about the opportunity to get to know all of you at my new school. Be ready to play a lot of games and have some fun!
Here are some quick reminders for what you need when you come to class. ON PE DAYS: 1) WEAR ATHLETIC SHOES (sneakers and tennis shoes recommended) 2) DRESS COMFORTABLY (be able to move and run!) 3) HAVE A GOOD ATTITUDE (have fun, cooperate, and be safe) Let's have a great school year! Last week, we played the sport of Lacrosse. Lacrosse is a game invented by the Native Americans and developed by the settlers into the game we see today. The game originally was much more violent and was even outlawed in certain parts of the country is now one of the fastest growing sports in the world! We learned about how lacrosse only had a brief history in the Olmpics (1904, 1908), but would not be surprised to see it back in the near future.
This week in Coach J's PE class, we are playing indoor soccer! We learned a little about the MLS (Major League Soccer), which is the international soccer league in the United States. Additionally, we learned about the two expansion teams added this year which are the New York City FC and Orlando City FC. If students would like to watch at home, ESPN shows games on Sunday afternoon.
Good luck on the Milestone Testing! This week in Coach J's P.E. class, we started our Ultimate Frisbee unit. We learned that the game started when the Frisbee Pie Company would deliver pies to local colleges, the students would begin to toss the pie dishes back and forth, which eventually turned into a game and then a sport. In 1968, Joel Silver organized the first official game at Columbia High School in New Jersey. This relatively new sport started in the United States and has now progressed to over 80 countries around the world! In fact, the Ultimate World Championships were held this year (2015) in Dubai with the United States winning 6 of the 7 divisions, with the only defeat coming against Germany.
Hope everyone enjoys their Spring Break! Stay safe and get some exercise in the warm sun. This week in Coach J's PE class, we learned about hockey. Hockey originated in Egypt 4,000 years ago and the more popular ice hockey in our culture was established in Canada in the mid 1800's. Field Hockey was introduced in the Olympics in 1908 and Ice Hockey was first displayed in the 1920 Summer Olympics (later changed to Winter). We also learned about Wayne Gretzky, who is the all-time leader in goals and assists in the National Hockey League (NHL). Additionally, the Canadiens have the most Stanley Cup (NHL Championship) victories of all time (24).
For Workout Wednesday, Coach Felix and myself had established 12 stations of exercise that included cardio, core, lower, and upper body exercises. This included push-ups, squats, goblet squats with kettle bells, wall ball squats, jumping rope, burpees, sit-ups, oblique sit-ups, planks, step-ups, mountain climbers, and lunges. The students were to count their repetitions with some students reaching over 800 reps throughout the activity! On Friday in our Class Competition, my class competed against Coach Felix's class in basketball and 4-square! Next week, we will be doing Archery. |
